The Bunker is not much to look at from the road: a low concrete bar laid into a hillside, with a few short radio antennas sticking out of it. It was built in 1964 by electronics tycoon E. Barret Mulligan who believed the end of times was coming. Only the roof, three feet of reinforced capstone, is visible above the grass.

Below grade, the house is an enormous masterpiece. The bedrooms, dining hall, and a full bowling alley are stacked three floors deep, lit entirely by artificial windows designed to imitate a garden that never existed. There's even a swimming pool on the lowest floor.
Mulligan passed away in 1979, but the estate is still maintained by a private foundation.
