Rickard’s White Tower rises a full eleven stories from the middle of a cornfield, a single column of whitewashed brick with exactly one room per floor. It was commissioned in 1931 by railroad magnate Crosby R. Rickard who, by all accounts, wanted to be able to see the weather coming.
The vertical arrangement
Each floor is connected only by a spiraling iron stair. The kitchen sits on the fourth floor, the bedroom on the ninth, and the parlor at the very top under a glass ceiling.
Rickard’s descendants are in discussions with the state to turn the tower into a public heritage site.
